Orthotics 101

Orthotics

Orthotics is a specialized branch in medicine that involves the design, manufacture, and application of orthotic devices. Foot orthoses are supports designed to fit your feet more efficiently than over-the-counter (OTC) arch supports. Orthotics is necessary when the natural biochemical balance of the lower body has been disrupted due to overpronation. They can be commercially-made devices, such as cushioned heel cups and insoles for shoes, or custom-made to meet individual needs.

If the foot functions abnormally such as pronating or supinating too much or too little at the wrong time, the rest of the soft tissues, muscles, and joints in the lower body will be forced to work differently. Over time, this change can cause pain and stiffness to develop, increasing the risk of acquiring osteoarthritis and other degenerative bone diseases.

A foot orthotic can help with a wide range of conditions, from mild discomforts to severe disorders such as diabetic foot ulcers.

A detailed assessment from an orthotic expert can confirm if a foot orthotic can assist a patient with a particular foot, leg, or even back problem. Orthotic treatment is also used by chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists, and podiatrists.

The most common reasons for the use of Ottawa orthotics are arch and heel pain, lower leg tendonitis, problems with the Achilles and posterior tibial tendon, and shin splints. Foot orthoses are also used for knee pain, such as chondromalacia patellae, iliotibial band syndrome, and “runner’s knee syndrome.” Such devices are made by doing foot scans or casts, measuring your foot and legs, as well as factoring in information on your exact medical condition.

Custom-made orthotics in Ottawa devices have a lot of benefits.

First, wearing orthoses every day will help reduce pain and cramping of your legs and feet. Starting orthotic use early can help reduce the chance that a child with metatarsus adductus will later need bracing or corrective surgery. Wearing orthotics will also prevent heel pain and limping.

Given that 70 percent of the population has some degree of abnormal foot condition, amany people could benefit from wearing foot orthotics in Ottawa. The lifespan of foot orthoses varies from one patient to another, depending on the materials used to make the foot orthotic, the patient’s foot structure, age, physical condition, and level of physical activity. Durability is an important consideration in choosing orthotic materials because it has to be strong enough to do its job.
